After traveling the North Atlantic, shipwrecks and pirate attacks lead Prince Arn and his newly formed crew to the New World, where trade deals soon turn into hostage negotiations. When enemy tribes attack, Arn’s band of Vikings teams up with the Algonquins to repel the invaders, leading to a long-overdue peace treaty and the discovery of the St. Lawrence seaway. Meanwhile, Mordred plots his revenge and schemes another attack on Camelot when Val and his family are at their most vulnerable.
Fully half of this volume is devoted to the conclusion of 'The Winning of Aleta,' the two-year epic in which Valiant first holds the beautiful queen of the Misty Isles, Aleta, responsible for the deaths of his sailing comrades. He kidnaps her and in nearly a deranged state, drags her through the capitals of his world-while slowly falling in love with her. She knows Val is good and noble,.
Aleta stirs up gossip when she suffers a case of mistaken identity with a mermaid, the prized Singing Sword is recovered, and Prince Valiant goes on a sensitive mission to find a missing heir.
In his introduction, Brian Kane looks at Dell's series of Prince Valiant comics in the 1950s, coupled with a new interview with the artist of that series, the fine Bob Fujitani (or Bob Fuji, as he was known in the 1940s when he drew some of the most exquisite work for Hangman, Air Fighters, Air Boy, and many other comics). Kane also shows in large size all the fine painted covers for this series, including one cover by the renowned Sam Savitt. Also a four page Fujitani page sequence from 1958.
In the afterword is another surprise: Kane illustrates all the other media forms that PV appeared in, including large and wonderful reproductions of the Hastinings House series of text and art novels in the early 1950s; the first PV Single Series comic with a cover by Foster; the PV 'Treasure Book' which was a Little Golden Book look-alike; a classic ad from Nostalgia Press for their 1970s reprints; the rare books The Young Knight and The Medieval Castle; covers of the Pacific Comics Club editions that ran from 1978 to 1983 in eight volumes; and finally, four large and wonderful paintings by Michael Kaluta for the Marvel Comics mini-series in 1995.
