Structural engineers, when you started a grad job did they train you in the use of the structural software? Right now my focus is on getting some more work experience. Following on from my previous question, what level of use should I have before I list an engineering program on my resume? I am referring to programs such as Autodesk (inventor/revit), spacegass, microstrain and some rocscience ones.

Inventor: I can model most things but can't yet do any of the sheet metal stuff. Spacegass: I only know how to analyse 2D objects at the moment. Should I just list e.g. Basic/intermediate etc next to each program?

I feel it would be a bit misleading to put them on my resume currently. Also, do you have any advice on learning some new programs. I am wanting to learn 12d,Civil3D or Strand7 next. Did you just work through the getting started guides?

So you must have classes which use them? Should have some idea? What year are you in? So what generally happens?

Do you get some cad drawings of structures and then make them from scratch on spacegass for example then run an analysis? Often you'll get some prelim/concept cad drawings to start you off, sometimes you won't and have to start from scratch (in these cases normally there might be previous jobs you can check out drawings to get an idea of what to model, maybe, or if it is simple enough you just start modelling it).

Before modelling you have to decide what exactly you are going to model and how you are going to do it, simplifying as much as you can (or as is necessary). Then of course restraints, section properties, loads, load combinations, analyse, make sure all looks okay, refine if necessary. Then start checking member strengths and deflections are okay, or if concrete choose appropriate reo for the section, re-size if necessary. Don't worry you'll learn heaps on the job.

Things such as exactly how best to model something, how accurate things need to be, how to restrain (i.e. Where to fix, where to pin, and what axes to fix/pin etc), other tricks of the trade etc. This can be very hard to pick up outside of the workplace without someone to help you, but what you can do in the meantime is still learn how to use the software and all the features generally though. What is VBA for? I have heard you use spreadsheets a lot in practice so I am guessing something to do with that. VBA is the programming language used behind all the MS programs.

In excel everything which is done is basically being done in the background with VBA, if you can learn how to use it however you can create easier to use more user friendly spreadsheets, there's just a lot more you can do once you master VBA which you can't do in the regular screen. So it's useful if your trying to setup a spread sheet for a design purpose that you'll want to use over and over, so you may spend a fair bit of time setting it up and coding any macros (with VBA), that you use, but it'll be better/quicker/easier for future use. Again certainly not required, but if your looking for something extra to put on your resume I'd recommend giving it a go.

So if you mess up 1 constraint, say put a pin instead of a roller, will it get checked and corrected somewhere down the track by someone else? Well you would hope so, there is always someone who has to verify your work but they won't necessarily check every single little detail, or every calc/model/excel sheet that you have used. Or they'll do there only quick hand checks or models themselves. Often if you have incorrectly put in a restraint, it may result in an instability in the structure and you'll get an error (so easy to fix). If not once you get some experience you can pick out the error when you are looking at the results (deflections, moments, shears etc) because it just won't look right or something is too high etc. The mistake might just go through unnoticed if it is negligible or conservative to the final result. You should always be very careful when inputting restraints, loads, section properties so this doesn't happen though.

Possibly they use programs more specific to building designs, rather then SG/Microstran. I would think for a small to medium rise building you would have one person doing most of the work, probably supervised by someone more experienced, again maybe someone else can comment on buildings. Don't think that structural engineers only do buildings. I originally had this sought of opinion but once I got experience elsewhere I now actually think I wouldn't even want to do buildings as they seem like a lot of repetitive work.

Structural engineers also do maritime structures, bridge structures and mining/industrial related structures. One thing the tutes don't cover is the 'record macro' feature of excel, I'd look into that before getting too far through the tutes as this is an excellent way to find out the code you need for certain actions that you want to automate with VBA. No not most, if your not doing design work then none of your time will be on it, if you are doing design work, then maybe 20% of the job may involve the software. Then more time doing hand calcs, going through the codes/researching, plenty of excel work in there, then some sketching and interaction with drafters, then maybe a design report. So I wouldn't say it gets boring because you aren't spending massive amounts of time on it all at once.

3rd year Sem 1. Maybe its just a UQ thing, they do seem to be more theoretical. So you probably would have just done your first assignment with Microstran/Spacegass. In the design subjects over the next few semesters you'll be expected to be able to apply Microstran/Spacegass to assist with your structural analysis. By the time you graduate you will be proficient at solving 2D models in Microstran/Spacegass. Extending these skills to 3D models is a non-issue, everything works exactly the same. The fourth years course(s) Advanced Structural Engineering has at least one assignment/tutorial in Strand7, which teaches you the basics of that software and then requires you to build/analyse your own basic model.

Structural Bridge Design and Rapt are pieces of software you will likely encounter once you have a job, but their use in assignments is (rightly or wrongly) discouraged or even explicitly disallowed in the design courses as these pieces of software are not assumed knowledge. This is to avoid giving an advantage to the few students who have picked up these skills through work experience or their own study.

I had never used either of these programs upon graduating, and that was not an issue. Being able to use AutoCAD just for 2D drawings is a very useful skill. Again, if things haven't changed, you will be disallowed from submitting AutoCAD drawings in the design courses, as the use of AutoCAD is never taught and therefore not assumed knowledge. If you don't have at least a working understanding of drafting in AutoCAD from high school graphics classes, try and pick that up. I just figured there aren't that many bridges that need designing. I'm not in my companies bridge group but have worked with them (we often share resources which is good to get varied experience). From what I have learnt the work varies depending on the 'times'.

At present they have done a lot of flood damage/assessment type work for bridges, which involves inspections and structural verification of the existing designs. And other times it has been the opposite with plenty of design work.
